Lecture 1

3 sub fields motor development motor learning motor control

Motor development- change across a lifespan (age related)

Motor learning- practice is required

Motor control- how movement is controlled

Degree of freedom problem- how body figures out how to moves which joint to move and which direction

3 degrees of freedom in wrist joint

Coordination \ multiple effectors work together to achieve a goal between different joints muscles or limbs

adjusting to environmental factors-

SERIAL ORDER PROBLEM- timing and order of an activity are critical for nearly every movement we produce timing must accounted for

spoonerism-making error in speech sounds by exchanging

coarticulation-preperati9on for subsequent movements rather than completing one movement before preparing for the next

Action slips- making an error in an action by exchanging specifics of a task due to mindlessly- putting something in the wrong place

PERCEPTUAL-MOTOR INTEGRATION PROBLEM - movement- perception

addresses how perception and motor control are integrated

perception might affect movement

Lecture 2

Information processing theory

There is one stimulus input , organism, one response output

Generalized motor program- a how to manual plan for a specific movement

Invariant(fixed) relative timing sequence of actions and relative force

Flexible (parameters) muscle selection, overall duration, overall force

Ecological Theory

I understand a stimulus(perception) the process by meaning is attached to information

Indirects v direct perception depending will change movement

( I want a coffee either I drink or don't drink it) depends on person

Affordance- environment and task in relation to the percievers own capabilities (may lead to different movement outcomes)

Dynamic System Theory- human movement is a function of interaction

Task Individual and environment all affect movement

INDIVIDUAL

Functional- MOTIVATION AND DRIVE

STURCTURAL- BALLEY FEET, HEIGHT, WEIGHT REQUIRMENT FOR TASLK

ENVIROMENT

physical-coming from a poor background belieft system,

TASK

equipment rules and goals

Lecture 3 (classifying motor skills)

skills- the learned ability to bring about predetermined results

4 criteria for skill

goal orientated, body and limb movement are required to accomplish the goal

movements are voluntary (relearning how to walk but not walking)

motor skills are developed as a result of practice not sequential or age related

Single dimensional skill classification

fine motor skill-precisee movement threading needle using smaller musculature

gross motor ski;;- multi limb, less emphasis on precision

children learn gross motor skills before they learn fine motor skills

Discrete- are very short lived beginning and end points short in duration( throwing a ball)

Cointinous- beginning and ending points are unclear determined by environmental factors depends by timing distance such as bicycling running swimming

Serial- combinations of multiple discrete motor skills in a specific order such as a triple jump sequence

Open skilled- no control over when action begins (beginning and end points are not clear)

closed skill- based on person (environmental factors) predictable in nature

self paced- penalty kick decides when to start the action

externally paced- goalie waits for person to kick the ball

Page 2

Lecture 4

Multidimensional classification

skills are not performed in a vacuum

regulatory conditions- contain environmental context and inter trial variability (context)

action requirements - body orientation and manipulation (task)

regulatory environmental context (\t ball batting versus hitting with a machine

(stationary vs in motion)

fixed vs variable

batting with a machine vs swinging at a pitched ball

free throw fixed

fixed and stationary- closed skill

variable and in motion- open skill

ACTION REQUIRMENTS

ody movement- me movin

object manipulation- skills that require the performer to manipulate objects or opponents (like batting or hitting a ball)

Locomotor skills, Nonmanipulative skills, Maniopulative skills

Body moving

Object manipulation
