Typolgies. Mccormick says Tpolgies are helpful in that they are1. Neat2. Simple3. Logical4. Consistant. countries were classified previously according to classes:first world, second world and third world.- became outdated because it was based on war participation-cold war politics -structure of the international system3 Variables:Political = freedom houseEconomic = GDP Per capita and Gini CoeffeciantSocial = life expectancy, mortality and adult literacy = Human Development index. SOUTH AFRICA and INDIA Both countries are new democracies even though south africa only became independent 21 year ago and India in 1948... 61 years ago. they both struggle with social issues of poverty, low employment rate and inequality. South Africa: Racial INEQUALITY- mainly due to 3 centuries of colonisation and 60 plus years of Apartheid = segregation of people based on the colour of their skin- this caused for mineral extraction to be on the backs of black people while the minority repead the rewards- because South africa is a liberal deomcracy and plays a meaningful part in the global capitalistic economy, it has not prioritised progressive policies to eradicate unemployment and race in fear that share prices will drop and the international community will stray away.- it becomes problematic if we think that class is more of an inequlity than race. but becaus eof race... things like white supremacy mattter and therefore people of colour aremarginalised.- although black people are the majority and strives to make them part of the economic system through BEE policies have been made, white people still have more than half of financial capital meaning economic power is in their hands. India: Gender inequalitywomens issues in India are problematic. - women are still demoted to do domestic work and - even though the constitution says that everyone has a right to equality and equal opportunities- law: discrimination on colour, caste, gender or religion is not acceptable - but misogyny and patriachalism still is the rule of the day in policy making decisions and rule making bodies- safety of women has been prioratised but have been disguised as not being able to protect themselves so they need more protection.- women make up 48 % of the population and were 47.% voters. - women are taking part in voting but are not within governmental structures making it more problematic. - women in India need to take a more solid stand and begin to stand together. - in 2012 only 4 women held ministerial positions in government- Mamata Benarjee remains one of few women leaders who have gone against social expectations and defyed norms.
