Why people obey the law:

Religious views

Moral views

Afraid of being caught

Damaged reputation

Why we need laws:

To protect vulnerable memebers of society, such as the young, eldery and ill people in particular .

Why laws change:

To cover a vast range of problems and things require need laws to carry on protecting society.

Two kinds of law:

Civil law (disputes between individuals)

Criminal law (oferences such as murder)

A civil court: a judge sitting without a jury decides alomst all civil cases.

Criminal courts: There is a seperate system of courts to deal with criminal cases. Less serious offences are dealt within the magistrates courts. Serious offences are dealt with in crown courts before a judge and a jury
