Stages of Recognition in The Odyssey.

Recognition of Ithaca: Odysseus realizes he is in Ithaca but does not recognize Athene, who is disguised.

Telemachus's Initial Disbelief: Telemachus does not recognize his father at first; Athene signals recognition.

Eumaeus’s Loyalty: Eumaeus shows loyalty but fails to recognize Odysseus until later.

Recognition by Argus: Argus recognizes Odysseus; signifies loyalty and his waiting is over.

Recognition by Eurycleia: Eurycleia recognizes Odysseus by his scar; he uses threats to keep his identity secret.

Revelation at the Contest of the Bow: Odysseus strings the bow; he reveals his identity by exposing the suitors' crimes.

Final Recognition by Penelope: Penelope tests Odysseus with the bed; only after the test does she acknowledge him.
