Flashcards do conjunto (22)
- 1Behavioral Researchis the study of the many variables that impact the formation of one's habits. Habitual patterns of decision-making have a huge impact because they affect so many areas of one's daily life. These habits directly impact how consumers spend money and why they purchase certain products. Impact on scientific decisions and public policy
Human Problems - 2Empirical statementsFactual; rooted in evidence
systematic collection and analysis of data - 3DataInformation collected through formal observation or measurement
- 4IntuitionAccepting explanations without testing them thoroughly
- 5Hindsight biasThe tendency to think we could have predicted something we probably could not have predicted
- 6Scientific methodSet of assumptions, rules, and procedures scientists use to conduct research
- 7Central TenantsProcedures used must
be objective
Building blocks lead to an
accumulation of scientific
knowledge
A tenet is a principle or belief honored by a person or, more often, a group of people - 8Scientific Method

- 9ValuesPersonal statements of beliefs
- 10FactsObjective statements
empirical study - 11Research reportPresents the scientific findings
Uses a standardized written format
Goal: To make clear which parts of the research process are objective and which are not - 12Basic Outline of ArticlesIntroduction
Literature Review
May be combined with Introduction
Generally can find hypotheses or research questions at the end of this section
Methodology
How the researchers designed and conducted the research
Results
Gives the stats (if applicable) or what the researchers found
Discussion
A summary of the results and typically how it connects to previous literature
Conclusion
Sometimes combined with the Discussion. Should have limitations of study listed and potential future research. - 13Basic researchAnswers fundamental questions
- 14Applied researchInvestigates issues that have implications for everyday life and provides solutions to everyday problems
- 15Program evaluation research (type of applied research)Conducted to study the effectiveness of methods designed to make positive social changes
- 16Research DesignSpecific method a researcher uses to collect, analyze, and interpret data
- 17VariableAny attribute that can assume different values among different people or across different times or places
- 18Descriptive researchanswer questions about the current state of affairs
Types include naturalistic observation, surveys and interviews
Cross-Sectional Research!
To create a snapshot of the current state of affairs - 19Cross Sectional ResearchThink of a cross-sectional study as a snapshot of a particular group of people at a given point in time. Unlike longitudinal studies that look at a group of people over an extended period, cross-sectional studies are used to describe what is happening at the present moment.
Researchers record the information that is present in a population, but they do not manipulate variables. - 20Correlational researchmeasurement of two or more relevant variables and an assessment of the relationship between or among those variables
- 21Pearson Product-Moment Correlation CoefficientThe most common measure of relationships among variables
Represented by the letter r - 22Experimental researchactive creation or manipulation of a given situation or experience
involves two or more groups of individuals
Followed by a measurement of the effect of those experiences on thoughts, feelings, health status or behaviors
To observe the impact of one or more experimental manipulations on a dependent variable
