Flashcards
1. Atomic Structure - History
Flashcards do conjunto (7)
- 1What happened in 1661?Robert Boyle overturned Aristotle's conception of the four elements and proposed that there are some substances that cannot be made simpler. These were the chemical elements.
- 2What happened in 1803?John Dalton suggested that elements were composed of invisible atoms. All the atoms of a particular element had the same mass. Atoms could not be broken down.
- 3What happened in 1896?Henri Becquerel discovered radioactivity which showed particles could come from inside the atom so it is not indivisible
- 4What happened in 1897?Thompson discovered electron, first subatomic particle. Later suggested plum pudding model, electrons located in circular arrays within a sphere of a positive charge accounting for the mass.
- 5What happened in 1911?Rutherford demonstrates the existence of positively charged nucleus that contains nearly all the mass of an atom.
- 6What happened in 1913?Bohr proposed fixed circular orbits around nucleus for electrons
- 7What happened in 1926?Schrodinger electrons occupy regions of space around nucleus determined by their energy.
