  1. 1What is Nativism?Children are born with an innate ability to organise the laws of language, which makes it easy for them to learn their native language. Children have language-specific abilities to help master language
Often links to Chomsky, Lenneburg or Pinker
  2. 2What is Behaviourism?Language is acquired through imitation and reinforcement. Children imitate accent and dialect, learn politeness strategies and repeat what they hear around them.
    Often links to Skinner
  3. 3What is Cognition?Language acquisition is a conscious and reasoned thinking process , involving the deliberate use of learning strategies.
Often links to Vygotsky or Piaget.
  4. 4What is Social Interaction?Reinforcing the role of social interaction between the developing child and the linguistically knowledgeable adults. Based on socio-cultural theory.
    Often links to Bruner
  5. 5Who wrote in 'The Articulate Mammal' that Chomsky was wrong?Jean Aitchison
  6. 6What is grammatical overgeneralisation?application of the plural '-s' endings to nouns, which already have plurals. E.g: 'man' becomes 'mans' instead of 'men'
  7. 7What is semantic overextension?Word has a much broader and general meaning to it.
E.g: calling all round things apples or all women being called 'mummy'
  8. 8What is semantic under extension? When a word is given a narrower meaning. than it should have..
E.g: a child may only use 'dog' when they see their family dog and not any other dog.
  9. 9What are exaggerating prosodics?Exaggerated intonation patterns and slightly higher frequencies, and greater pitch intonation
  10. 10What is recasting?phrasing sentences in different ways, such as making it a question.
  11. 11What is echoing?Repeating what the child says.
  12. 12What is expansion?Repeating what the child says in a more linguistically sophisticated form.
  13. 13What is expatiation?expounding further on the word by giving more information.
  14. 14What is labelling?providing the name of objects, using simplified vocabulary.
  15. 15What is over articulation?using more precise sounds contained in words- stretching out words and sounding out 'super vowels'.
  16. 16What is the holophrastic/ one-word stage? One word utterances are made and this occurs between 12-18 months.
  17. 17What is the two-word stage?two word combinations are made and this occurs between 18 - 24months
  18. 18What is the telegraphic stage?Three of more word combinations are made, but hardly any articles, such as 'The', are present. Occurs between 24-36 months.
  19. 19What is the post-telegraphic stage?Remaining function words are acquired and used accurately. Verb tenses can be manipulated correctly. Occurs between 30+ months.
  20. 20Who discussed negative formation in children?Ursula Bellugi and there are 3 stages to this process.
  21. 21What are Bellugi's stages of pronoun formation?1- Use their own name
