Flashcards
Lecture 4
Flashcards do conjunto (9)
- 1What is a response variable?Outcomes that have been measured on each experimental unit.
- 2What is an explanatory variable?A variable that explains explains the variabilities seen in response variables
- 3What sort of data is binary data?It is categorical. Eg smoker/non smoker and has a yes or no data. Ie 1 or 0
- 4What does it mean when data is nominal? This means that there is no natural (or relevant) ordering. Eg the blood groups
- 5What does it mean when data is ordinal?Data is ordinal if there is a natural ordering. (Eg degree of pain)
- 6What is discrete numerical data? Can it be treated as a categorical data? This is data where the observations only take certain numerical values such as integers/whole numbers.
Eg how many possums were in the trap
This can be treated as a categorical data but this will discard the magnitude of relationships between successive outcomes. - 7What is continuous numerical data? This is where recorded values/observations are from some form of measurement. Eg height, age and blood.
- 8What is the difference between a ratio and a proportion?Ratio is where it is a fraction given by one quantity over another whereas a proportion is one quantity when compared to the whole.
- 9What are rates?Rates are ratios for quantities for different units
