Lecture 4

arielhchen Statistics University English 9 cards

Cards in this deck (9)

  1. 1What is a response variable?Outcomes that have been measured on each experimental unit.
  2. 2What is an explanatory variable?A variable that explains explains the variabilities seen in response variables
  3. 3What sort of data is binary data?It is categorical. Eg smoker/non smoker and has a yes or no data. Ie 1 or 0
  4. 4What does it mean when data is nominal? This means that there is no natural (or relevant) ordering. Eg the blood groups
  5. 5What does it mean when data is ordinal?Data is ordinal if there is a natural ordering. (Eg degree of pain)
  6. 6What is discrete numerical data? Can it be treated as a categorical data? This is data where the observations only take certain numerical values such as integers/whole numbers.
Eg how many possums were in the trap
This can be treated as a categorical data but this will discard the magnitude of relationships between successive outcomes.
  7. 7What is continuous numerical data? This is where recorded values/observations are from some form of measurement. Eg height, age and blood.
  8. 8What is the difference between a ratio and a proportion?Ratio is where it is a fraction given by one quantity over another whereas a proportion is one quantity when compared to the whole.
  9. 9What are rates?Rates are ratios for quantities for different units
