- 1Types of visual output:-Screens and monitors: CRT monitor & TFT monitor
-Large displays: digital projectors, interactive whiteboard & plasma screens
-Small displays: mobile phone screens & PDAs. - 2Laser printersLaser printers print a full page at a time in a similar way to a photocopier. The image is formed on the page using a laser beam on a light-sensitive drum that uses electrostatic charges to attract toner particles. The page then passes over a heated fuser unit to melt the toner on to the page.
Monochrome lasers are very popular in offices and other situations where they need high-quality documents printed quickly, and colour is not very important.
Colour laser printers have recently become much less expensive to buy, and so more people are buying them. They use three colours of toner, cyan, magenta and yellow, plus the usual black one. Colour laser printers produce clear text and diagrams, but photographs are likely to be limited in quality compared to high-resolution inkjet printers, as the resolution they use tends to be lower and fewer colours are used. - 3Inkjet printersInkjet printers are very popular, in particular for home use, because they tend to be cheaper to buy than laser printers. The basic models have three ink colours plus black, and they work by spraying ink on to the paper. Photo printers have very high resolution and often many more colours than the basic three, which means they can reproduce the colours in the photograph accurately. When used with coated paper, they can produce photographs close to professional quality. Specialist papers are available that allow prints to be transferred to other items such as clothes, mouse mats or even mugs.
- 4Multi-function printersMulti-function printers include a built in scanner, and so can be used as a simple photocopier, suitable for home or small office use. They often have fax facilities too. They usually use inkjet rather than laser technology.
- 5Dot-matrix printersThe main use for dot-matrix technology is to print of multipart stationery. Large line printers can print very quickly, use continuous stationery, and are usually used in industrial situations where high-volume prints are needed and quality is not very important. They are used infrequently now as other printing methods have become cheaper and faster than dot-matrix technology. Some cash tills in shops use small dot-matrix printers and multi-part stationery to produce a copy of the receipt for the customer, whilst retaining a copy for the shop. These use heated wires and heat-sensitive paper to produce text that is of fairly low quality and tends to fade over time.
- 6PlottersFlat-bed plotters use pens which move across the paer to draw a detailed and accurate image. Other plotters move the paper across rollers whilst the pens move backwards and forwards. They are used mostly to print large-sized technical drawings, although smaller models are available for drawing graphs, and some can be fitted with small blades so that letters and shapes can be cut out of the material on the plotter to make signs or shapes.
Many engineers and architects now use very large inkjet printers rather than plotters for printing out plans and drawings on paper up to A0 size. They are extremely expensive to buy, and are only used for specialist purpose, but they have the advantage of being able to produce full-colour graphics, whereas the pen plotters can only draw lines and shaded areas. - 7SpeakersExternal speakers are plugged into the computer and play sounds and music produced by the sound card. They vary a great deal in size, quality and appearance and in the level of volume they produce.
Many monitors laptops have built-in speakers that play sound of relatively low quality, suitable for general-purpose use, but not of high enough quality for music or some games players. They are also fairly limited in volume, as they are designed for personal use. Satellite navigation systems also usually have built-in speakers. Headphones plug into the computer and produce the sound directly into the user's ears.
