  1. 1Newton's thoughts on lightThat is was a particle like bullets. His experiment had small slits made in paper and then a source was shone on it. He postulated that the light particle would go through the slits as distinct beam and create distinct bands on a surface
  2. 2Young's thoughts on lightlight is like waves. Resulting in gradient light on the backing paper
  3. 3Light wave characteristicsTrough and Crest.
    Trough x trough = positive reinforcement
    Crest x Crest = positive reinforcement
    Trough x Crest = negative
    Crest x Trough = negative
  4. 4Positive reinforcement would result in what? Negative?It would result in light hitting the back, negative would result in no light (they cancel themselves out)
  5. 5Electromagnetic spectrumIs the range of different electromagnetic radiation which can exist. Our eyes are sensitive to only a very small small portion of that radiation. 700nm to 400nm. Red is 700nm, violet is 400nm
  6. 6Ultraviolet and inferred lightAre values lower and higher than those we see with our eyes. E.g., Snakes seeing inferred light which eminates off things that are warm. Insects and the falcon things seeing ultraviolet to see the urine of voles
  7. 71 nanometre (nm)10 to the power of negative 9. 1 billionth of a metre or 1 millionth of a millimetre
    1nm = 1millimicron
  8. 8Thre types of species with image forming eyesVertebrate, arthropods, Molluscs
  9. 9Imaging from a pin hole cameraLight which is reflected from specific parts off an object are let in through the hole, all other light is excluded, the image is then very sharp but dim
  10. 10larger hole than pin holeallows more light to enter, however, reflected light from object comes off in more light rays and these are all allowed in the hole, this results in a blurry but bright image.
  11. 11Lens in the pin hole's holeA lot of light is allowed in, but a convex lens focuses divervent relfected light back onto one point. This makes the image bright and sharp
  12. 12Lenses refract orbend light
  13. 13at 10m the lens refracts light so that it converges or focuses on a single point. At 100m the image is blurry because?the rays of light are focused infront of the film or backing and the rays that hit the film have been given space to unfocus again.
  14. 14Solution to the 100m problem?Change the distance between the lens and the film. This brings the film in line with the point in which the lens has focused the light
