Why were Canals Built across Britain? Canals were the most efficient way of transporting goods
How Were the Canals Built? Canals were huge engineering projects which required enormous skill and labour
How did the Canal Network develop from the 1760s onwards? A network of Canals developed across Britain from 1761 onwards
Why did the Canals begin to decline after the 1840s? The canals declined after the 1840s for a variety of reasons, however, the most important one was due to competition from the railways
How were the Railways built? Like the canals, Railways were built by large numbers of navvies, many of them Irish immigrants
How did the Railway network Develop? As the benefits of the railway became apparent to businessmen and the public, miles of railway were built across the length and breadth of Britain
