Flashcards
AQA Biology 3.4 Lipids
Flashcards do conjunto (17)
- 1what do lipids contain?carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
- 2what are lipids insoluble in?water
- 3what are lipids soluble in?organic solvents such as alcohol and acetone
- 4what are the main groups of lipids?triglycerides, phospholipids and waxes
- 5what is the main role of lipids?plasma membranes
- 6what are 4 roles of lipids?-energy source
-waterproofing
-insulation
-protection - 7what are triglycerides made up of?three (tri) fatty acids and a glycerol (glyceride)
- 8what kind of reaction bond these?condensation
- 9how do triglycerides become varied?differences in the fatty acids
- 10what do all fatty acids have in common?a carboxyl (-COOH) group with a hydrocarbon chain attached
- 11what makes the fatty acid saturated?if there are no carbon=carbon double bonds because all carbon atoms are linked to the maximum possible number of hydrogen atoms
- 12what is it called if there is one double bond?Mono-unsaturated
- 13what is it called if there are more than one double bonds?polyunsaturated
- 14what makes a phospholipid different to lipids?one of the fatty acid molecules are replaced by a phosphate molecue
- 15what are the features of a phospholipid?hydrophilic head (phosphate)
hydrophobic tail (fatty acid) - 16what is the test used to test for lipids?emulsion test
- 17what is the process of this test?-2cm^3 of the sample mixed with 5cm^3 of ethanol
-shake thoroughly
-add 5cm^3 of water
-cloudy white = lipid present
