- 1Witches meet and plan to meet Macbeth.Act 1 Scene 1
- 2Duncan hears battle reports from Captain. Thane of Cawdor has deceived Duncan so title is to be given to MB.Act 1 Scene 2
- 3Witches meet with extended metaphor of sailors ship. Then they meet MB and Banq and give them prophecies. Ross arrives and tells MB he will be TofC.Act 1 Scene 3
- 4Duncan and Malcolm discuss execution of TofC. Duncan praises Banq and MB, giving him the new title.Act 1 Scene 4
- 5LMB reads letter from MB and calls upon spirits. MB enters and she tries to convince him to kill Duncan.Act 1 Scene 5
- 6Duncan arrives at MB's castle and is grateful. LMB tries to be perfect hostess.Act 1 Scene 6
- 7In soliloquy, MB debates pros and cons of murder. LMB questions his masculinity and rejects her femininity. They agree to do it.Act 1 Scene 7
- 8Banq and Fleance go on a walk. They meet MB and give him a diamond for LMB from Duncan. Banq says he's been thinking about witches but MB says he hasn't and they should talk about it later.Act 2 Scene 1
- 9LMB waits for MB to return from killing Duncan. MB feels guilty and panics while LMB tries to calm him down.Act 2 Scene 2
- 10Porter has a dramatic monologue. MD finds Duncan's body. MB confesses to killing guards and LMB faints. Malcolm and Donaldbain flee.Act 2 Scene 3
- 11Old Man and Ross recall events. MD tells them Malcolm is suspected of paying guards. He says MB will be king but he isn't going to the coronation as unnatural things have happened.Act 2 Scene 4
- 12Banq reflects on prophecies and is suspicious of MB. He's ambitious but decides not to act. MB pretends to need Banq's advice to find out about trip with Fleance. In soliloquy, MB fears Banq's offspring being king and is decisive about killing them. He persuades murderers into killing them to prove their manhood.Act 3 Scene 1
- 13MB and LMB feel uncertain and insecure. They discuss feast and resolve to praise Banquo. MB tells LMB he plans to commit another crime but doesn't confide in her.Act 3 Scene 2
- 142 murderers joined by a 3rd. They wait for Banq and Fleance and kill Banq but Fleance escapes. They decide to tell MB.Act 3 Scene 3
- 15MB has banquet. Murderers inform him. MB stands to raise a toast but sees Banq's ghost. He is terrified so LMB says he often has fits. Ghost goes and MB regains composure. Ghost reappears and MB goes crazy. LMB dismisses guests. MB tells LMB he thinks MD is against him and he plans to revisit witches.Act 3 Scene 4
- 16Witches meet with Hecate who is angry for them not involving her. They plan to summon apparitions to trick MB into becoming overconfident.Act 3 Scene 5
- 17Lennox suspects MB. The Lord says Malcolm will have help from "him above". Lennox supports Malcolm for trying to get military support from English Court. MD in disgrace for not attending banquet and is trying to join Malcolm.Act 3 Scene 6
- 18Witches create spell. MB appears and witches trick him into asking for apparitions.Act 4 Scene 1
- 19LMD with son and Ross who tells her MD has fled. She accuses him of cowardice then talks to son. Messenger arrives warning of danger. LMD's son killed on stage by murderers and LMB runs off pursued by them.Act 4 Scene 2
- 20Malcolm is suspicious of MD and tries to trick him by pretending he's a bad king. MD's lament for Scotland convinces Malcolm to retract claims. Malcolm reveals English support. Doc appears and mentions saintly work of King Edward the Confessor. Ross arrives and tells MD his family is murdered. MD vows to kill MB himself.Act 4 Scene 3
- 21Doc and gentle woman discuss LMB who's been sleepwalking. She refuses to tell him as has no witnesses; doc tries to persuade her; LMB appears and confesses guilt while trying to wash blood of her hands. Doc says she's in need to spiritual rather than medical attention.Act 5 Scene 1
- 22Scottish Lords plan to join "English power" to attack MB. Plan to meet them near Birnam Wood. Thanes discuss MB's unease about being exposed and are confident of victory.Act 5 Scene 2
- 23MB enters with Doc and attendants, feeling fearless due to prophecies. He jeers a servant while he reports the English are arriving. Asks Doc to cure his wife then dismisses medical advice and asks what would cure his country. MB ignores Doc's reply as obsessed with prophecies.Act 5 Scene 3
- 24Malcolm orders men to cut down "a bough" from Birnam Wood and carry it to conceal numbers. They learn MB plans to stay in Dunsinane and endure a siege as men are demoralised and only fight out of necessity.Act 5 Scene 4
- 25MB alters between arrogance and despair. At first he boasts of victory then a woman's scream is heard. Seyton investigates. MB reflects on how nothing terrifies him now. Seyton tells him LMB is dead. MB reflects on meaningless of life. Messenger tells him Birnam Wood is coming, he feels outages and orders an attack instead.Act 5 Scene 5
- 26Malcolm, MD and Seyward approach camouflaged. Battle begins.Act 5 Scene 6
- 27MB kills young Siward and this gives him confidence.Act 5 Scene 7
- 28MB and MD meet but MB doesn't want to fight as feels guilty from killing MD's fam. MB thinks he can't be harmed but MD reveals he was born by Caesarian Section. MB accepts he's been misled but refuses to back down.Act 5 Scene 8
- 29MB is dead and Malcolm has won. Malcolm is concerned with missing members of army. Siward discovers his son has been killed but is not upset as he has died protecting Scotland. MD enters with MB's head.Act 5 Scene 9
