- 1What is an organic substance?A molecule that has a high proportion of carbon atoms
- 2What is an inorganic substance?Made of molecules/ions with no more than one carbon atom
- 3Why is Mg2+ important in plants?It is a constituent of chlorophyll.
No magnesium = no chlorophyll.
Without chlorophyll, plants can't photosynthesise and produce glucose (needed for growth) - 4Why is iron important to humans?It is a constituent of haemoglobin which transports oxygen around the blood
- 5What are phosphate ions used for?Making nucleotides (e.g. ATP)
Forming biological membranes from phospholipids - 6What are Ca2+ ions used for?Bones + teeth in mammals
