Scrooge in Stave 1

1. He is not charitable

   • He refused to give even the smallest donation to charity for the poor and he refused to give his clerk a sufficient amount of coal to keep warm

2. He is scary/unapproachable

   • "Nobody ever stopped him in the street to say...no man or woman every enquired the way to such and such a place, of Scrooge"

3. He is lonely

   • He doesn't meet with friends, or go to parties in the festive season. He eats alone, goes to an empty home and doesn't start any conversations

4. Refuses to be festive

   • When his nephew said 'Merry Christmas' he replied with 'Good Afternoon' no matter how many times Fred wished him a Merry Christmas. He refused to join in with the festive greetings.
