Context(Macbeth)
MONARCHY James I ruled a hierarchical society with religion supporting the idea of a ruler appointed by God (the Divine Right to rule). People stayed in traditional societal roles in order to avoid disorder and chaos
WITCHES James I and many others truly believed in witches. They are likely to have been terrifying to a contemporary audience. Shakespeare was appealing to his king’s beliefs.
KING EDWARD (England) Appointed by God, with a ‘healing benediction’. Acts as a contrast to the ‘tyrant’ Macbeth. Sends troops to help Malcolm (showing the union of England and Scotland in positive light- James I of England and VI of Scotland))
GUY FAWKES Made an attempt to assassinate King James. Shakespeare is showing loyal support for his monarch and warning of the awful consequences of regicide.
MEN The ideal Jacobean male was strong, powerful and able to use violence in defence of the state. The male was the head of the household.
WOMEN The ideal Jacobean woman was gentle, nurturing and supportive of her husband. In literature the stereotypes of crone, damsel and femme fatale abound.
