  1. "He was already dead, he reflected. It seemed to him that it was only now, when he had begun to be able to formulate his thoughts, that he had taken a decisive step. The consequences of every act are included in the act itself."(28 Orwell)

  2. "How easy it was, thought Winston, if you did not look about you, to believe that the physical type set up by the Party as an ideal--tall muscular youths and deep bosomed maidens, blond-haired, vital, sunburnt, carefree-- existed and even predominated. Actually, so far as he could judge, the majority of people in Airstrip One were small, dark, and ill-favored. It was curious how that beetle like type proliferated in the Ministries: little dumpy men, growing stout very early in life, with short legs, swift scuttling movements, and fat inscrutable faces with very small eyes. It was the type that seemed to flourish best under the dominion of the Party." (60 Orwell)

  3. "Thus, at one moment Winston's hatred was not turned against Goldstein at all, but, on the contrary, against Big Brother, the Party, and the Thought Police; derided heretic on the screen, sole guardian of truth and sanity in world of lies." (14 Orwell)

  4. “Almost as swiftly as he had imagined it, she had torn her clothes off, and when she had flung them aside it was with that same magnificent gesture by which a whole civilization seemed to be annihilated."(125 Orwell)

  5. To be an individual in a society where you're meant to be one with the group

    • Deer in the Works
      • "The profound silence was broken first by the whistling of a switch engine and then by the click of a latch as David stepped into the woods and then closed the gate behind him. He didn't look back."
    • David is running away from his new job because he doesn’t want to become one with his job and company, he wants stay an individual. Winston is becoming more and more of an individual because he is starting to hate the Party. He is starting to hate the Party because it is holding him back from becoming more of an individual. They are both an individual in this world or company where you are supposed to be like everyone else.
  6. To not accept the way life works in this society

    • The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas
      • "They leave Omelas, they walk ahead into the darkness, and they do not come back. The place they go towards is a place even less imaginable to most of us than the city of happiness. I cannot describe it at all. It is possible that it does not exist. But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas."
    • All though Winston knows that it is an act of thought crime to have sex with Julia he still does it because he doesn’t accept the way this government system works. The ones who walk away from Omelas leave because they do not accept the way they have to obtain happiness, they don’t like how another is suffering for their happiness. In both of these quotes they are standing up to how these things are happening in their lives.
  7. Living an average life, but in doing so giving up your individualism

    • The Unknown Citizen
      • "And had everything necessary to the Modern Man, A phonograph, a radio, a car and a frigidaire. Our researchers into Public Opinion are content That he held the proper opinions for the time of year; When there was peace, he was for peace: when there was war, he went."
    • Both the Unknown Citizen and the beetle men have something in common, they both are the type of people a dystopian government flourish upon. These are the people who have given up there individualism to live an average life under a dystopian government. Both of them follow the government blindly and don’t question the government’s rule.
  8. To have your own sense of individuality is abnormal

    • The Pedestrian
      • Leonard Mead walks out at night just for the satisfaction of walking, while everyone else sits in their house and watches television. This act causes police to take him to a Psychiatric Center.
    • In both "The Pedestrian" and "1984" the main characters both have a sense of individuality. Both of their governments don't want them to have their own individuality because that makes it harder for their governments to keep power.
