  1. Definitively categorized status
    1. Organized Attica's military force
      1. Made Athens a more potent military power
        1. Battle of Marathon 490BCE
      2. Made people know their place
        1. Before one was either a land owner or a land worker
          1. Simplified participation in politics (e.g. Boule only allowed top 3 classes)
          2. Reduced tension between poor & rich
            1. Lessened threat of uprising
          3. Based entirely on wealth
            1. Upper class was no longer just the noble families
              1. Took status away from eupatrid families & eupatridae could even be placed in a lower class
                1. Outraged the ruling class
              2. Encouraged rich traders to come to Attica
                1. Encouraged citizens to produce more food
                  1. Economic growth
                2. Gave archon oppertunity to all members of the top class
                  1. No longer entirely controlled by eupatridae
                    1. Still an oligarchy (or timocracy) as full power is still in the hands of the few
                      1. Areopagos no longer exclusive
                      2. Reduced corruption between nobles
                        1. Those in power more likely to be skilled politicians rather than favourite family members
                          1. More effective government
                      3. Four classes with distinct military roles

                          1. Generals (Strategoi)
                            1. Highest class
                            2. Hippeis - 300-500 medimnoi
                              1. Medium-high class
                                1. Horse owners, Cavalry
                                2. Zeugitai - 200-300 medimnoi
                                  1. Hoplites & general infantry
                                    1. Medium class
                                    2. Thetes - 200 medimnoi or less
                                      1. Oarsmen, personal servants or auxilary forces (e.g. slingers)
                                        1. Low class
