Variation and Evolution Mindmap

Variation and Evolution Mindmap

1. Variation

   • Continuous
     • Hight
     • Weight
     • Bell Shaped Curve
   • Discontinuous
     • Blood Group
       • A
       • B
       • AB
       • O
     • Bar Chart
     • Individual Groups

2. Reproduction

   • Sexual Reproduction
     • Single Cell Produced
       • New set of chromosomes
     • Offspring Genetically different
     • Two Parents
   • Asexual Reproduction
     • One Parent
     • "Clones"
     • Identical Chromosones
   • Mutations
     • New genes
     • Occur at random
     • Ionising radiation
       • Increases chance of mutation

3. Gene Therapy

   • Cystic Fibrosis
     • Inherited disease
     • Thick Mucus
       • Block Bronchioles
     • recessive allele
     • Can be shown using family trees
   • Inserting normal gene into affected tissue
   • Difficulties
     • Gene must be expressed
       • (Switched ON)
     • Targeting appropriate cells
     • NOT A CURE
   • Potential to be effective treatment

4. Natural Selection

   • Charles Darwin
   • Variation in species
     • Best characteristics are most likely to survive
       • Genes are then passed on to next generation
         • Over time the genes that gave an advantage become most common in a species

5. Evolution

   • Warfarin
     • Overuse
       • Mutation made rats resistant
     • Rat poison
     • 1960
   • Bacteria
     • Mutation
       • Resistant to cleaning fluids and antibiotics
         • "Super Bugs"
