Interviews

  1. Definition

    • A data collection method involving direct verbal questioning of a research participant (interviewee) by a researcher (interviewer) to gather in-depth information.
  2. Purposes

    • To discover and explore a participant's perspective, experiences, feelings, and beliefs.
    • To generate rich, detailed qualitative data.
    • To clarify and follow up on responses in real-time.
  3. Types

    • Structured
      • Formal set of questions asked in the same sequence to all participants.
      • Focus on consistency and reliability.
      • Best for quantitative data analysis.
    • Semi-Structured
      • Use of an interview schedule (guide) with predetermined topics/questions.
      • Flexibility to probe, rephrase, and follow up on new themes that emerge.
      • Most common type for qualitative research.
    • Unstructured/In-Depth
      • Highly flexible, conversational approach.
      • Focuses on a central topic but with few or no pre-set questions.
      • Aims for deep, rich narrative data.
  4. Procedures

    • Planning
      • Determine purpose (what data is needed).
      • Develop interview schedule (list of questions/topics).
      • Select and train interviewers.
      • Address ethical issues (informed consent, confidentiality).
    • Conducting the Interview
      • Establish rapport/trust with the interviewee.
        • Use active listening and non-verbal cues.
      • Ask clear, open-ended questions (e.g., 'tell me about...', 'how did you feel when...').
  5. Uses

    • To explore complex or sensitive subjects where in-depth understanding is necessary.
      • To conduct pilot work to inform the design of subsequent questionnaires or other instruments.
    • To collect personal accounts, feelings, and motivations that surveys can't capture.
  6. Data Analysis

    • Qualitative Models
      • Thematic Analysis: Identifying, analyzing, and reporting patterns (themes) within the data.
        • Discourse Analysis: Examining how language is used in social contexts (what is said and how).
          • Narrative Analysis: Focusing on the stories participants tell and their structure.
      • Quantitative Models (Primarily for Structured Interviews)
        • Coding responses into quantifiable categories for statistical analysis (e.g., tallying the frequency of certain answers).
  7. Issues & Limitations

    • Interviewer Effect (Bias): The interviewer's characteristics or behavior can influence the participant's responses.
      • Time and Cost: Labor-intensive for conducting, transcribing, and analyzing.
        • Generalizability: Findings from a small number of in-depth interviews may not be representative of a larger population.
        • Reliability: Difficult to ensure consistency and replication, especially with unstructured interviews.
