Software

1. This is the programs and other operating information used/run by a computer.

2. Software makes hardware useful. It gives it the instructions it needs to operate. When hardware runs software, it loads the software into its RAM.

3. There are two main types of software. They are systems software and applications software.

4. Systems Software

   • Systems software helps run and maintain the computer. It includes:
     • The Operating System
       • This is the biggest part of system software which allows other system software and application software to communicate with hardware.
         • All computers have an operating system. They can't operate without one.
           • It provides a user interface, manages the use of memory and the opening, closing, saving and deleting of files. Most of them have features that look after the security of the computer with usernames and passwords.
             • Examples of operating systems include Windows, Android, iOS, Mac, etc.
     • Drivers
       • This is a piece of software which controls a peripheral device.
     • Utility Software
       • Also known as 'utilities'. Programs that add functionality to a computer or helps it perform better. Eg virus protection, password protection, memory management and file compression.

5. Applications Software

   • It is used to carry out tasks on a computer like messaging friends, doing homework, writing emails, etc. It includes:
     • Word Processor
       • An application used to write, edit and format text.
     • Web Browser
       • An application that displays web pages.
     • Graphics Software
       • An application that assists the user in creating or editing images.
     • General purpose software are software that help to carry out different task using the same application.
       • Examples are word processors, spreadsheets and desktop publishers.
     • Special purpose software are software used to perform one specific task.
       • Examples are flight simulators, payroll software or an application for revising maths.
     • Applications are also used on smartphones to do lots of things like social networking, messaging and listening to music.
