Relationship
MARRIAGE
- 'married.. had been married at any rate.. probably still was married' 'Empty mind .. stupid, vulgar
- Repitition of married- reminding himself- distances hmself from us slightly- we don't know him as well as we thought- no other indication of marriage from what we have seen in his daily life- suggests marriage is not as precious- normality of loveless marriages. Such powerful adjectives portray not just a dislike but a disgust- stark contrast to marriage today and typical love and trust between spouses.
- 'Only recognised purpose was to beget children' 'approved by a commitee'
- Marriage between people is for Party only- lives belonged to them- vessels of pro-creation only. 'refused' if 'physically attracted' nowadays- important foundation of marriage- desire for one another. W + K's marriage is an exam[ple of breakdown of marriage under restrictions of party.
- 'Not permit divorce'
- -Marriage isn't for them but party- don't care about their happiness- That's why Julia 'appeared to know the essential parts already' - R.ships are not unique.
- STRUCTURE- flashbacks
- Marriage is not shown to be special/ unique- Orwell uses diff layout to distinguish between Winston's flashbacks of sex with the prostitute and his wife. Shows us how uncomfortable he is- doesn't see much difference between the two- no intimate connection
- 'To do any violent or noisy or painful thing that kmght black out the memory'
- It is an uncomfortable/painful distressig memory for him- opposite of what it shoudl be- a tender precious moment- shows what party have diminished sex to, and the effect it has on its citiznes- no intimate love between partners.
- 'married.. had been married at any rate.. probably still was married' 'Empty mind .. stupid, vulgar
JULIA
- 'I love you'
- Julia's message stands out as a simple subject-verb-object statement of emotion, as a pose to all the verbal manipulation encountered in the book.
- 'It was impossible his affair should end successfully'
- Knew they were doomed from the start- part of him, like Julia, just wants to enjoy himself
- 'What time d'you leave work? Eighteen thirty'
- Interrogative sentences with short sharp declarative answers. Almost affectionless- hurridness- under pressure - jumpy atmosphere
- 'Youthful body'
- Most accept the relationship as a positive ting- Julia presupposes the relationship- in this instance love must refer to sexual desire. Not the kind of devotion leading to self sacrifice like the love of Winstons mother.
- 'love offering hatred... hated sight of you .. rape and murder you'
- blunt brutal truth- enormous juxtapose- value honesty as so much of life is a lie- distorted view of how to talk to partner- violence within him.
- 'lying, bruised and terrified .. kissing her' 'Not quite abreast.. Never looking at one another'
- -Only way they can exchange kisses- extremity- how violence and pain causes them to abandon principles- foreshadows betrayal-restricitions
- 'Katherine would die.. succeed in getting married .. commit suicide together' 'He wished they were married.. a couple of then years' standing.'
- Know they are doomed but want to be doomed together- Party takes this awayfrom them and does what they feel is the 'ultimate betrayal' - stops them from loving each other. reversal of romantic convention- not wish for lovers who feel urgent desire for each other- desire for simplicity.
- he would have liked to continue talking abut his mother’
- Julia is drifting off t sleep when Winsto is tryig to pe ip- what does this depict about their relationship- is it an intellectual ne- leetig- lust- and desperacy and convenience.
- 'No!'
- Sign he is not as committed to his relationship- perhaps it just sered as a distraction.
- 'I love you'
FAMILY
- 'tragic .. in a way that was no longer possible'
- -Nothing worth losing -what is fundamentally natural no longer existsOld times represent emotional ties where family was valued and upheld. These memories help him to realise his oppression.
- 'Sacrificed herself to a conception of loyalty that was private and unalterable.'
- Everything Winston knows today has been moulded to what the Party desires showing how much he values his mothers actions- as they are proof a time existed where family mattered above all else.
- 'look of helpless fright on the woman's greyish face'
- Children dont bring her joy but rather stress, worry and fear. Breakdown of loyalty between family members- vicious who she fears more than she loves- contrast to W's mother.
- 'normal for people over thirty to be frightened of their children'
- Bond of family is less important- more surprising- links to party spreading fear.
- ‘When father disappeared... mother did not show any surprise or violent grief....became spiritless..waiting for something’
- -Relationships- so used to waiting for partner to disappear any time does not seem strange – -Now she was waiting to be vapourised- no hope left in her. -agony of living in waiting
- ‘mother had disappeared...merely been sent to a forced labour camp’
- Direct link to Stalin- feel the effect fo this more as now Winston is a motherless fatherless child- by suggesting she was put into a forced labour camp- he is making us hate Stalin more- as we see the effect t of this on the main protagonist- what his regimes really resulted in.
- 'tragic .. in a way that was no longer possible'
BETRAYAL
- 'I don't care what you do to her. Tear her face off, strip her to the bone'
- VIvid imagery - links to amn- moment he no longer cares for anyone- now only love = for big brother. Looks not of romance and love but of disgust- 'All you care about is yourself' - what made their relationship special has now gone. 'full of contempt and dislike
- 'vile biting day in March.. earth like iron and all grass seemed dead'
- Eartyh is dead- like hope- everyhting is decaying- no ;life- no hope - party taken over.
- 'any one of the dozen hurrying figures might have been hers'
- no individuality- doesn't know her anymore- last of their relationship is gone.
- He loved her and would not betray her .. knew as he knew the rules of arithmetic'
- Linking love to arithemetic- suggests they manipulate maths and so his love for her is true-
- 'I don't care what you do to her. Tear her face off, strip her to the bone'
