The Five Kingdom Classification

The Five Kingdom Classification

1. Animalia

   • multicellular eukaryotes with cells that are differentiated to form tissues
   • no chloroplasts
     • feed hererothrophically
   • no cell walls
   • sometimes have cilia or flagella

2. Plantae

   • multicellular eukaryotes with cells differentiated to form tissues
   • some have chloroplasts and photosynthesise
   • cell walls always present
     • cellulose
   • sometimes have flagella

3. Fungi

   • eukaryotic
   • no chlorophyll
     • no photosynthesis
       • feed heterotrophically
   • simple body form
     • may be unicellular or made up pf long threads called HYPHAE
     • large fungi like mushroom have compacted mass of cells as part of life cycle
   • reproduce by means of pores
   • cell walls made up of CHITIN
     • not cellulose
   • never have cilia or flagella

4. Proctocista

   • made up of very diverse range of organisms
     • any eukaryote that is not a fungus, plant or animal is classified as a protoctist
   • eukaryotic
   • mostly single-celled
   • some have animal-like cells (no cell wall)
     • PROTOZOA
   • some have plant-like cells (cell wall and chloroplast)
     • ALGAE

5. Prokaryota

   • Two types
     • Archaea
     • bacteria
     • look similar, but biochemistry is different
   • cells with no nucleus
   • DNA exists as a circular 'chromosome'
   • smaller circular molecules of DNA often present
     • PLASMIDS
   • no membrane-bound organelles
   • ribosomes smaller than in eukaryotic cells
   • cell wall containing peptidoglycans
   • usually exist as single cells or small groups of cells

6. biggest groups into which living organisms are classified
