Adhesives

Natural
- Animal glues
  - e.g. Animal hide, bone, hooves
  - Used to glue woods, fabrics and leathers
- Natural resins
  - e.g. Gum arabic
  - Used for papers and fabrics. It is a binder in watercolour paints
- Inorganic cements
  - e.g. Portland cement
  - Used in the building industry for bonding bricks and blocks
Synthetic
- Synthetic resins
  - e.g. Cascamite
  - For bonding wood
  - Waterproof
  - Can fill slight gaps
- Epoxy resins
  - e.g. Araldite Two
  - joins most materials
- PVA
  - e.g. Poly-Vinyl Acetate
  - used for gluing woods
  - generally not waterproof
- Contact adhesives
  - e.g. Evo-Stik
  - used for bonding SHEET materials on contact
- Hot glue sticks
  - they work on application of heat
  - for the rapid bonding of papers and cards
- Acrylic cement
  - e.g. Tensol
  - for gluing acrylics only
Using Adhesives
- requires good surface preparation - surface must be clean of dust and previous coatings
- adhesive applied to either one or both components
- once applied, adhesives must be held together until dry
Advantages of using adhesives
- join is essentially invisible
- adhesives do not damage the component or cause indentations
- able to join dissimilar materials
- insulating properties of adhesives help to prevent corrosion
