Parathyroid Glands

1. Location

   • posterior surface of fibrous capsule of thyroid gland
   • superior pair= 1cm superior to entry point of inferior thyroid artery
   • inferior pair= 1cm inferior to entry point of inferior thyroid artery

2. Functions

   • secretes parathyroid hormones- controls calcium metabolism
   • balance of Calcium and phosphorous in the blood is NB

3. Blood Supply

   • Arterial
     • inferior thyroid arteries
   • Venous Drainage
     • Parathyroid veins drain to a network of veins on the anterior surface of the thyroid and trachea

4. Embryology

   • Superior parathyroid glands develop from 4th pharyngeal pouch
   • Inferior parathyroid glands develop from 3rd pharyngeal pouch
