Orthodoxy

  1. SURVEILLANCE

    • 'Police Patrol Snooping through People's windows
      • Police- supposed to protect us- allowed to violate our rights instead - not safe in own home- unnerving from a society which values privacy.
    • 'Only the Thought Police mattered'
      • Short- declarative sentence. Tensions created as structure builds up to them- firs monitored actions- then monitored actions and words. Dramatic also from simplistic name- Police-control, order and judegment with thoughts- uncontrollable and wanddering? Syntax- end of para.
    • 'every sound you made was overheard...except in darkness, every movement scrutinised'
      • 'every' - REPETITION- uncomfortable and suffocating. 'scrutinised'- someones interpretation of a wrong move puts you in danger. only slight relief= darkness- absurd- negative connotations. So bleak Darkness is more appealing.
    • 'Danger of a concealed microphone' 'Only a twitch, a quiver...rapid as the clicking of a camera shutter. 'nipped into silence by...proximity of a telescreen'
      • Technology is dangerous- supposed to help us-now used against u-SIMILE- Links to surveillance- One tiny move can have fatal consequence.- 'done for' Obedience by authority- always surrounded
    • stampede of boots up the stairs...solid men in black uniforms...iron shod boots.. truncheons in their hands’
      • Very extreme and unnecessary – so many people for two, unarmed victims- so strong it is almost satirical -Very violent and harsh imagery –miliatry- Nazi like uniform- untouchable and unliflike depiction- no humanity. -Such a strong semantic field of violence- links to Hitlers regime and the way he instilled fear I everyone as a mechanism of control
  2. LANGUAGE

    • WAR IS PEACE FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
      • Capitals- importance- paradoxical and confusing. These are the Party's priciples. Capitals- importance- emphasis- again gives an intimidating and aggressive tone.
    • 'impossible to enter'
      • Barabaric connnotations of imprisonment. Restricted- highly secret- introduced eaarly on- reader remains aware of it.
    • 'list of phrases and you struck out the ones that were inapplicable'
      • Orwell views writing as a source of creativity and so it is banned in 1984- No form of thinking individually- all thoughts are given from party.
    • 'Newspeak.. narrow the range of thought'
      • Way of controlling people's thoughts- limits self expression.
      • Links to Stalin's ideology'Ideas are more powerful than guns we would not let our enemies have guns, so why would we let them have ideas?'
    • 'beautiful thing.... destruction of words
      • Sadistic desire for destruction- shows the type of person orthodoxy encourages. symes delight ithis is intended to be appalling
        • Orwell viewed the impoverishment of vocabulary as a primary tool f totalitarian regimes.
    • 'cutting down to the bone'
      • Taking away what is necessary for life-vivid-connotes death deprivation/lifelessness
    • 'rectifiying'
      • Euphamistic terms were used by actual totalitarian regimes to disguise barbaric practices-Orwell felt that the deterioration of language was connected with the decay of moral values
      • Another example of hoe the Party practiced reality control- by eradicating independent thought through re-writing history to suit its purposes.
  3. EXPECTATIONS

    • 'age of three refused all toys except a drum .. machine gun and a model helicopter'
      • -Military toys juxtaposed with innocence, tenderness and vulnerability of a three year old. Satire- before you can understand things you must be perfect citizen-unattainable- must be born this way- short declarative sentences add to this- fact like- simplistic nature suggests it is shouted- no emotion for dead.
    • 'Special relaxation of the rules.. he had joined the spies''
      • Government never 'relax rules' - shows perfect party member to be prevented by government to- contradict themselves.
    • 'orthodoxy is unconciousness'
      • Syme is self aware = dangerous. Fact he realises this and still gat vapourised shows Party's policies muct be followed robotically. -eradicate intelligence
    • 'At six .. nine ... eleven' 'twenty four hour a day devotion to duty'
      • - Listing- bluntness- relates to satire- must be perfect throughout life- No room for human error / humanity in general. No sleep- inhuman- unrealistic expectations of the party- robotic- no feelings/ interests- pure devotion to duty.
    • 'Paralysing stupidity .. unquestioning.. part for which intellignece was not required'
      • Strong supporter of Party-'evicted' from youth league- support the party. 'strenuousness of life' Received no better treatment for his efforts- end up in miniluv- simply followed what told- doesn't think for himself representation of a human without thought.
    • 'Furious desire to track down... denounce and vapourised'
      • Harsh violent language- almost as thought hey have a blood-thirsty hunger. Only instinct remaining are survival ones- reseeding society.
    • 'sees to clearly, speaks to plainly'
      • Party wants disillusioned-how hard it is to be accepted. Symes love for party is juxtaposed with 'unquestionably vapourised' confusing- no-one safe.
  4. MENTAL TORTURE TO ACHIEVE ORTRHODOXY

    • 'Ticking slowly . eyes grew larger'
      • Almost a sense of brainwashing/ hypnosis- hallucinogens.- we shall fill you with ourselves' - viewed as empty vessels- brainwashed.
    • 'panic took hold... breath stopped'
      • Almost dying in pain just from thinking about it- power fear has
    • 'suddenly change their tune, call him comrade, appeal to him'
      • Manipulation-show him that BB is where the trust and kindness lies- Party break them down to build them back up again- [psycological game.
    • 'Everyone had to do as a matter of course .. formality'
      • Seems even more ridiculous as ''confessed he had been a spy .. murdered his wife'. Contradictions- just want them to bend to their will- Satirical- so out of Character for W. Fact that confession= formality shows it has nothing to do with guiltconfirms idea of no justice- part of demoralisation and amking you feel like a criminal- wnat to mentally break them 'real and iaginary crimes'
