1. What is a textile component?

   • Extras added to fabric used to make textile item. Without them - very difficult to make them.
   • Pre-manufactured/home-made e.g. shoulder pads or covered buttons.
   • Role is to aid construction (threads), allow for opening + closing (zip), add strength (interfacing), embellish (beads), insulate (wadding), add shape (shoulder pads) + improve quality of product.
   • When choosing one, designer needs to consider care, cost, quality, aesthetic appeal, safety issues + end use.

2. Components

   • Sewing Threads
     • Function: Hold fabric pieces together, add fastenings + decoration.
     • E.g. - cotton, polyester, metallic + silk threads.
   • Beads + Sequins
     • Decorate with colour, texture, catch light + add weight to product.
     • Plastic, wood + diamante.
   • Ribbon, bindings, cords + braids
     • Add decorative edgings or features. Used as ties + fastenings.
     • Fabric strips or different weights, patterns, widths + fires.
   • Interfacings
     • Aid sewing, add strength, give shape + structure or used as bonding glue.
     • Non-woven sew/iron-on (fusible) fabric or paper backed web-bonding (Bondaweb).
   • Pre-manufactured motifs
     • Speed up decorative processes + add feature.
     • School + team badges, children's animal motifs.
