Interview process 1) Interviews should start with building rapport/trust by being friendly & respectful. You might spend a few minutes talking about the weather, whether the participant found the place okay, something you have in common. But, you want to stay away initially from them discussing anything related to your research topic because you want the audiorecorder to be on for that. 2) Review the consent form for the interview and for the audio-recording. This can include an explanation of your personal background, why you are doing the research, what the purpose of the research is (which is quite different than quantitative research seeking objectivity and being cautious not to introduce bias) – here bias is okay and acknowledged. 3) Ask questions in the interview guide, including prompts for more depth and examples. Remember it is okay to vary questions as needed to get at depth, ensuring that as much as possible you are wording questions in a neutral way – not leading. Use their language, not your own “expert” language. 4) End the interview with asking if they have anything else to add or any questions for you. 5) After the interview, the researcher should complete their reflexive journal. Again, this is different than clinical documentation that is supposed to be objective, provide evidence for statements made, and does not include the researchers’ personal views/reflections and questions. In the reflexive journal, the researcher includes: • anything at all that comes to mind in terms of interpretation, • the interviewers’ experience, 93 • reaction to the interview, • additional observations that may not have been picked up by the audio-recording, and what the participant said after the audio-recording was turned off (often participants will say more – in an informal way – once the audio-recording is off).
