About Qualitative Research

GoConqr Original

What the page covers

The resources follow the usual path of a qualitative research course. Some set out the basics: the differences between qualitative and quantitative work, research paradigms, and epistemology. The flowchart Research methods covers social constructionism and symbolic interactionism. Others look at designs such as grounded theory, ethnography, narrative investigation, phenomenology, case study and action research.

Where to start

Begin with the mind maps Qualitative Research Approaches and Types of Qualitative Research to see the main designs side by side. The flashcards Lecture 14 - Qualitative research then ask when qualitative research is used, what features it shares and which data collection methods it relies on.

Data collection and analysis

  • The Interviews mind map defines interviews as open-ended questions put to participants, then moves on to data analysis.
  • Slide sets cover interviews and focus groups, and textual data collection through surveys, story completion and vignettes.
  • The Story completion tasks quiz checks that you know why the technique is projective.
  • Mind maps on IPA, observation and qualitative data analysis help with the interpretive side.

Using quizzes and maps together

Read a mind map first, then take a quiz on the same topic. Grounded theory works well here: it tests the aim of generating a theory rather than testing a hypothesis, and it raises inductive reasoning. If an answer surprises you, go back to the map and look again. The Companion MCQ's: Collecting data quiz raises issues such as researcher self-disclosure and rapport. The Qualitative Research Final Exam quiz is a good check once you have worked through the topics.

Where it fits

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with the mind map Qualitative Research Approaches, which lists grounded theory, ethnographic designs, narrative investigation, phenomenology, case study and action research. Then try the Grounded theory quiz or the flashcards from Lecture 14 - Qualitative research to see what has stuck.

What do the mind maps cover?

The mind maps cover interviews, focus groups, observation, participant observation, IPA, grounded theory, ethnography and qualitative data analysis. Others look at research design, paradigms, the quality of qualitative research and the types of qualitative research, so you can work through a topic in turn.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users rather than by GoConqr itself, so styles vary. A free account saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.

Who are these resources for?

They are aimed at university students learning qualitative methods, such as interviews, focus groups and thematic analysis. Teachers can also use them as ready-made material, for example slide sets on fundamentals, discursive approaches and developing qualitative methods, or quizzes to set as practice.

Which quizzes cover data collection?

Several do. Companion MCQ's: Collecting data looks at methods and rapport with participants, while Story completion tasks deals with projective techniques. There are also quizzes on interviews, qualitative surveys and focus groups, so you can test each method separately.

What if the topic I need is missing?

Try a related title first, as ethnography, phenomenology and discourse analysis each appear in several formats. If nothing fits, you can make your own mind map, flashcards or quiz on the topic with a free account.
