- 1Battle of Messines in BelgiumThis battle raged from June 7th to 14th, claimed over 50,000 casualties on both sides. 10,000 men were killed instantly when British Forces detonated 19 mines under German lines.

- 4The Battles of the Isonzo River, ItalyAlso known as the Isonzo Front, the fighting here delivered no great return for either side. But the casualties were enormous; almost 500,000 perished.
- 5The Lochnagar Crater, France"The whole earth heaved and flashed, a tremendous and magnificent column rose up in the sky. There was an ear-splitting roar. The earth column rose higher and higher to almost 4,000 feet."
