Flashcards do conjunto (29)

  1. 1Breathingusing muscles to expand and deflate the lungs
  2. 2Ventilationair moving into and out of the lungs
  3. 3Respirationa chemical process that happens in cells
  4. 4Alveolusa small pocket in the lungs (alveoli)
  5. 5Gas exchangeoxygen and carbon dioxide diffusing into the lungs
  6. 6Why can particles diffuse?Concentration gradient
  7. 7Why do lungs have a large surface area?So they can hold more oxygen
  8. 8What do candles need so they can burn?Air
  9. 9If a snail is placed in a bell jar and the air is removed. What will happen? The snail will die
  10. 10What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?Glucose + oxygen --> carbon dioxide + water
  11. 11What else is released during respiration?Energy
  12. 12One monitor measures oxygen saturation (sats), which is shown as a percentage. 100% means that the blood is fully saturated. What happens if it is below 80%?Organs can be damaged
  13. 13What does it mean when a doctor says, "You're sats are low."?You need more oxygen
  14. 14What does RBC stand for?Red Blood Cells
  15. 15How are the lungs adapted for gas exchange? They have about 700 million little pockets called alveoli. This gives the lungs a larger surface area - more diffusion occurs.
  16. 16How are thick are the alveoli? One cell wall thick.
  17. 17What happens when you breathe in?The ribs contract and the diaphragm move downwards
  18. 18What happens when you breathe out?The ribs relaxes and the diaphragm moves upwards
  19. 19What is the function of a RBC?It carries oxygen around the body
  20. 20A change that happens to your body when you run.Your pulse rate will increase and the muscles will receive more oxygen as you breathe heavier
  21. 21How are substances carried to cells in a tissue?Concentration gradient
  22. 22What happens when oxygen gets into the blood? It (oxygen) enters the red blood cells where it sticks to molecules of haemoglobin. This makes the cells change colour, from dark-brown to bright red
  23. 23What happens in capillaries?Oxygen gradually leaves the RBC and dissolves into the plasma. This leaks through minute holes in the capillaries and form TISSUE FLUIDS, which carries the oxygen to the cells.
  24. 24Dust is prevented from getting into the lungs by a layer of mucus, which is swept away by what?Cilia (hair like structure on alveoli)
  25. 25When carbon dioxide is added to limewater, what happens to it?The limewater will turn from clear to cloudy
  26. 26What substance does anaerobic respiration in humans produce? They produce LACTIC ACID
  27. 27What is anaerobic respiration? The breakdown of sugars and glucose. It is used when there is not enough oxygen to perform aerobic respration. Glucose --> lactic acid
  28. 28Which gas is needed for respiration in plants?Carbon dioxide
  29. 29What is the units used to measure air?Cubic centimetres
