largest organelle
surrounded by a nuclear membrane
houses nearly all genetic material
contains chromatin which condenses into chromosomes during cell division
contains the nucleolus which produces RNA and ribosomes - 2—Rough endoplasmic reticulum:
Has ribosomes on it
Transports the proteins synthesised by the ribosomes
Made of flattened, membrane-bound sacs called cisternae

Modifies proteins and packages them off into vesicles for secretion

site for protein synthesis
consists of 2 sub-units
- 8—Centriole (top):
forms fibres known as a spindle - which move chromosomes during nuclear division
