Biology: Transport In Plants

Flashcards do conjunto (24)

  1. 1DiffusionThe movement of particles of gas, solvent or solute, from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
  2. 2OsmosisThe movement of water molecules from a dilute solution to a concentrated solution, through a partially permeable membrane.Osmosis
  3. 3PhotosynthesisIs a process by which plants transform light energy from the sun into chemical energy of food.
  4. 4RespirationAny of various chemical reactions that releases energy from food molecules and occur in living things.Respiration
  5. 5SolventA usually liquid substance capable of dissolving one or more substances.
  6. 6SoluteA substance which dissolves in a solute to form a solution.Solute
  7. 7Vascular BundleA narrow collection of tubes.
  8. 8XylemA tissues of higher plants that carry water and dissolved materials upward, functions also in support and storage lies deeper than the phloem and usually makes up the woody part.Xylem
  9. 9PhloemA tissue of higher plants that contains tubes serving to carry dissolved food materials and that lies mostly outside the cambium.Phloem
  10. 10Stomata (Stoma)A small opening which is surrounded by two guard cells and through which moisture and gases pass in and out of the epidermis.Stomata (Stoma)
  11. 11TranspirationThe process by which green plants give off water vapour through the stomata in their leaves.
  12. 12Epidermis Of LeafA thin surface layer of protecting cells in seed plants and ferns.Epidermis Of Leaf
  13. 13Transpiration StreamThe flow of water through a plant, from the roots to the leaves, via the xylem vessels.Transpiration Stream
  14. 14Guard CellsEach of a pair of curved cells that surround a stoma, becoming larger or smaller according to the pressure within the cells.Guard Cells
  15. 15Mesophyll CellsThe inner tissue of a leaf, containing many chloroplasts.
  16. 16Palisade LayerA layer of parallel elongated cells below the epidermis of a leaf.
  17. 17What needs to be transported?- Water : Is needed as a solvent, support.
    - Minerals : Are needed for healthy growth and raw materials.
    - Dissolved Food : Is needed for energy and raw materials.
  18. 18Factors Affecting Rate Of TranspirationHumidity : If air contains a lot of water vapour, it can't accept more from transpiration.
Temperature : Warm air holds more water than cold, so more water can evaporate at higher temperatures.
Water Supply : The rate of water loss from a plant is affected by the water available to the plant. If there is no water around the roots, there is none left to replace water lost by transpiration.
  19. 19Plant Structure: Waxy CuticleTo protect the leaf without blocking out light.Plant Structure: Waxy Cuticle
  20. 20Plant Structure: Upper & Lower EpidermisTo allow more light to reach the palisade cells.Plant Structure: Upper & Lower Epidermis
  21. 21Plant Structure: Palisade CellTo absorb more light, to absorb all available light.Plant Structure: Palisade Cell
  22. 22Plant Structure: Spongy CellsAirspaces allow CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) to diffuse through the leaf, and increase the surface area.Plant Structure: Spongy Cells
  23. 23Plant Structure: StomataAllows CO2 to diffuse into the leaf.Plant Structure: Stomata
  24. 24RootsTypes of roots:
Tap Roots - Go straight down
Branching Roots - branch out like a tree.
    Function :
    - Absorption of minerals and water
    - To anchor the plant
    - Holds soil together and prevents erosion.
