• 1. Seprates the cell from it's external environment
• 2. Acts as a selective barrier around the cell. It permits selective control of molecules entering and leaving the cell.
• 3. Creates and maintain concentration gradients between its internal and external environment
• 4. Maintains pH and charge differences
• 5. Is important in cell cell recognition
• 6. Has receptors for cell signalling
