Slides in this set (5)

  1. JTA: D - g

    • Heart rate, blood pressure and RPE monitoring techniques before,
    • during, and after cardiorespiratory fitness testing.
  2. BEFORE

    • Blood pressure
    • Typically assessed using brachial artery auscultation.
    • Refer to JTA D - b for proper technique for taking resting blood pressure.
    • RPE: Rate of Perceived Exertion
    • "How hard you feel you are working."
    • Memory procedure -- most common form of RPE anchoring
    • Category-Ratio scales: Borg's CR-10 -- 0-10
    • Borg's RPE Scale: 6-20
  3. BEFORE

    • All values should be taken after having the client in a seated position for roughly 5 minutes to ensure values are resting levels.
    • Patients should avoid smoking cigarettes or ingesting caffeine for at least 30 minutes before the measurements are taken.
    • Heart rate
    • Taken by the radial pulse palpitations, carotid pulse palpitations, auscultation with a stethoscope, or using a HR monitor.
    • Bradycardia: <60 bpm
    • Tachycardia: >100 bpm
    • Based on beats per minute.
    • If using pulse palpitations, the pulse should be counted for at least 15 seconds.
    • Multiply the 15-sec pulse count by 4 to get beats per minute.
    • <15 seconds can reduce accuracy.
    • Palpitation of the radial artery is preferred over carotid during exercise due to the activation of the carotid baroreceptors which can reduce HR.
  4. DURING

    • Each measurement should be taken during each stage and each exercise intensity.
    • Heart rate & Blood pressure -- Assessed during the last minute of each stage.
    • The EP-C need to make sure the client's arm is relaxed.
    • The arm needs to be at heart level.
    • The client should not be touching the equipment
    • *2-finger rule at most.
  5. AFTER

    • Blood pressure and heart rate should be monitored for at least 5 minutes of recovery or until both are stable.
    • Heart rate --Should decrease by roughly 10 bpm during the first minute and then 22 bpm in the second minute of recovery.
    • If this response has not occurred, then the client may need an extended recovery time or lower the speed of the
    • treadmill (if using).
    • RPE -- Continually monitored throughout. Checking for signs and symptoms as well.
