MUMPS what is it?

• memory management- Os manages the transfer of data between the CPU,RAM and main memory storage (e.g. hard drive)
• user interface - Provides the user with a way to navigate through the functions of the computer without the user having to use code. Can be graphics card e.g. windows, it can be text based (no mouse) (command line interface) e.g. MSDOS
• multi-tasking-Manages the input and output devices e.g. mouse, printer
• peripheral management-Allows more than one program to be carried out at once so the user can switch between programs they are using without having to close them down e.g. using word and having google up at the same time so that you can get information from the internet
• security-It restricts access to the system or particular files e.g. so that you don’t accidentally delete something important or to protect it from theft e.g. lock screen-

Different Utility's?

• security: there are 3 main types...
• Antivirus- Protect the computer from viruses.
• Spyware protection- Protect the computer from spyware that finds out bank passwords and other private stuff you don’t want others to know.
• Firewall- Protects un-authorised access to a program.
• Disk Operation: there are 3 main types...
• Formatting- It prepares a data storing device (e.g. flash drive) by deleting the data on that device.
• File transfer- It transfer’s files between your devices over a network (e.g. internet).
• Defragmentation- It prevents fragmentation and collects all the information together.
• System Maintenance- Keeps a record of all the hardware and the operating system and diagnostic tests the device to see if there are any problems.
• System Clean-up Tools- Disk Clean-up is used to reduce the number of unnecessary files on your hard drive.
• Automatic Updating- It installs software update when they are needed automatically without the users permission using the internet

Different software types?

• Off The Shelf- not designed or made to order but taken from existing stock or supplies
• advantages:cheaper, available immediately and easy to upgrade.
• disadvantages:you are not in control, complicated and you may need to compromise on your requirements.
• Custom Written (Bespoke)- specially designed for the companies needs.
• Advantages- get exactly what software you want and it will function how you want it to.
• Disadvantages- lots of money, takes a long time to develop and no user help on internet.
• Open Source- completely free software
• advantages- free to use, fairly easy to learn and can open most software such as word.
• disadvantages- not very many features, cant run all software you need and not very much bug fixing support.
• Proprietary- software that is owned by an individual or a company
• Advantages- support from company and cheap
• Disadvantages- major restrictions and the source code is usually kept secret
