Lesson 1: Combining Like Terms
- Learning Goal:
- I can simplify polynomials using combining like terms.
- I can identify like terms
- Lesson Stands:
- A.1.A.3.2- Simplify polynomial expressions by adding, subtracting, or multiplying.
-
Lesson 1: Combining Like Terms
- Vocabulary:
- Polynomial- An expression that has constants, variables and exponents, that can be combined using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Monomial- A polynomial with only one term.
- Binomial- A polynomial with two terms.
- Trinomial- A Polynomial with three terms.
- Combine Like Terms- The consolidation of terms whose variables and exponents are the same.
-
Lesson 1: Combining Like Terms

- Parts of a Polynomial:
- Coefficient: Number multiplied by a variable
- Variable: Letter used to represent an unknown value
- Constant: Numbers without a variable or exponent
- Operator: The specific operations used within the expression
-
Lesson 1: Combining Like Terms
- Polynomial Rules:
- No division by variables
- a variable's exponent can only be 0, 1, 2, 3,...etc.
- it can't have an infinite number of term.
- When simplifying polynomials, we are shortening the expression.
- Combining Like Terms requires that terms have the same variable and exponent.
