  1. Introduction to Film Noir

    • Film Noir was first shown in the mid 1940's and was very popular until the late 1950's, although modern examples such as the Sin City films are still being produced today. The typical Film Noir would be shot in black and white, and generally focused on dark and tragic stories involving misfortune, murder and other unlawful activities. The lack of colour made it perfect for dark and dangerous crime dramas or detective stories.
    • In French Film Noir means film black or black film. It was first used in 1946 by a French critic Nino Frank at which time it was not recognized as a genre within film due to its unlawful portrayal of sensitive topics. It was finally widely excepted as a film genre in the 1970's.
    • Although early Film Noir was originally associated with the American film industry, Film Noir examples can now be found all over the world.
