- Alan Baddeley (1966) conducted a research to investigate the coding of memory; 4 groups were asked to recall words. 1st group were asked to recall acoustically similar words (cat, cab, can), 2nd group were asked to recall acoustically dissimilar words (pit, cow, few), 3rd group were asked to recall semantically similar words (big, large, great), and 4th group were asked to recall semantically dissimilar words ( hot, good, huge). Recall was worse with acoustically similar words. after 20 minute interval, recall was worse with semantic similar words.

- The use of artificial stimuli meant that it lacked realistic application as the participants were asked to recall words, that held no particular personal meaning, thus there would be a risk of generalising the findings to different sorts of memory task. Eg. when processing meaningful information, people may use semantic coding even for STM tasks - which suggests that the findings have limited application.
