Module Aim

To introduce students to basic underlying geological principles and concepts relevant to environmental science:

understand the internal structure and the composition of the earth

develop knowledge and understanding on the theory of plate tectonics, and its manifestation on the earths current surface, and its consequence on the operation on the geological past

The geological time scale

minerals

understand the three major sub-division of rocks, how they are formed and be able to interpret what their presence tells us about their history, as well as how their properties relate to environmental science issues (sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks)

develop an appreciation of rocks and geological events may be dated, both relatively and in terms of absolute time scale

geoscience data (e.g. geological maps) and methods of acquisition and analyzing this data

develop an awareness of how geological understanding is essential to the field of environmental science
