- 1abyssal hillAn abyssal hill is a small hill that rises from the floor of an abyssal plain. They are the most abundant geomorphic structures on the planet Earth, covering more than 30% of the ocean floors. Abyssal hills have relatively sharply defined edges and climb to heights of no more than a few hundred meters.
- 2abyssal plainAn abyssal plain is an underwater plain on the deep ocean floor, usually found at depths between 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) and 6,000 metres (20,000 ft)
- 3abyssal zoneThe abyssal zone or abyssopelagic zone is a layer of the pelagic zone of the ocean. "Abyss" derives from the Greek word ἄβυσσος, meaning bottomless.
- 4active margincontinental margins facing the edges of diverging plates * little earthquake activity is associated with these
- 5bathyal zonethe part of the pelagic zone that extends from a depth of 1,000 to 4,000 m (3,300 to 13,100 ft)
- 6bathymetrythe study of the ocean floor
- 7benthic zonethe ecological region at the lowest level of a body of water such as an ocean or a lake, including the sediment surface and some sub-surface layers
- 8continental marginsubmerged out edge of a continent
- 9continental riseis an underwater feature found between the continental slope and the abyssal plain
- 10continental shelfthe area of seabed around a large landmass where the sea is relatively shallow compared with the open ocean. The continental shelf is geologically part of the continental crust.
- 11continental slopethe slope between the outer edge of the continental shelf and the deep ocean floor
- 12fracture zoneis a linear oceanic feature—often hundreds, even thousands of kilometers long—resulting from the action of offset mid-ocean ridge axis segments. They are a consequence of plate tectonics
- 13guyotflat-topped sea mounts that once penetrated the sea surface
- 14hadal zonealso known as the hadopelagic zone, is the deepest region of the ocean lying within oceanic trenches
- 15hydrothermal venthot springs on active oceanic ridges
- 16ice agethe series of glacial episodes during the Pleistocene period
- 17island arccurving chain of volcanic islands and seamounts, usually found in parallel to the concave edges of trenches
- 18littoral zonehe near shore area where sunlight penetrates all the way to the sediment and allows aquatic plants (macrophytes) to grow
- 19neritic zonethe relatively shallow part of the ocean above the drop-off of the continental shelf, approximately 200 meters (660 ft) in depth
- 20ocean basinthe deep-sea floor beyond the continental margin
- 21oceanic ridgeformed and evolves as a result of spreading in Earth's lithosphere—the crust and upper mantle—at the divergent boundaries between tectonic plates
- 22oceanic zonethe area of the ocean lying beyond the continental shelf, but operationally is often referred to as beginning where the water depths drop to below 200 meters
- 23passive marginthe transition between oceanic and continental lithosphere that is not an active plate margin
- 24pelagic zonesometimes called the open-ocean zone and can be contrasted with water that is near the coast or on the continental shelf
- 25seamounta submarine mountain
- 26shelf breakThe steepening of the bottom that marks the seaward limit of the continental shelf and the beginning of the continental slope
- 27sublittoral zoneThe biogeographic region of the ocean bottom between the littoral and bathyal zones, from the low water line to the edge of the continental shelf, or to a depth of approximately 660 feet (200 meters).
- 28submarine canyona steep-sided valley cut into the seabed of the continental slope, sometimes extending well onto the continental shelf, having nearly vertical walls
- 29transform faultOr transform boundary is a plate boundary where the motion is predominantly horizontal. It ends abruptly and is connected to another transform, a spreading ridge, or a subduction zone
- 30trenchdeepest in earths crust
- 31turbidity currentan underwater current flowing swiftly downslope owing to the weight of sediment it carries
