  1. 1abyssal hillAn abyssal hill is a small hill that rises from the floor of an abyssal plain. They are the most abundant geomorphic structures on the planet Earth, covering more than 30% of the ocean floors. Abyssal hills have relatively sharply defined edges and climb to heights of no more than a few hundred meters.
  2. 2abyssal plainAn abyssal plain is an underwater plain on the deep ocean floor, usually found at depths between 3,000 metres (9,800 ft) and 6,000 metres (20,000 ft)
  3. 3abyssal zoneThe abyssal zone or abyssopelagic zone is a layer of the pelagic zone of the ocean. "Abyss" derives from the Greek word ἄβυσσος, meaning bottomless.
  4. 4active margincontinental margins facing the edges of diverging plates * little earthquake activity is associated with these
  5. 5bathyal zonethe part of the pelagic zone that extends from a depth of 1,000 to 4,000 m (3,300 to 13,100 ft)
  6. 6bathymetrythe study of the ocean floor
  7. 7benthic zonethe ecological region at the lowest level of a body of water such as an ocean or a lake, including the sediment surface and some sub-surface layers
  8. 8continental marginsubmerged out edge of a continent
  9. 9continental riseis an underwater feature found between the continental slope and the abyssal plain
  10. 10continental shelfthe area of seabed around a large landmass where the sea is relatively shallow compared with the open ocean. The continental shelf is geologically part of the continental crust.
  11. 11continental slopethe slope between the outer edge of the continental shelf and the deep ocean floor
  12. 12fracture zoneis a linear oceanic feature—often hundreds, even thousands of kilometers long—resulting from the action of offset mid-ocean ridge axis segments. They are a consequence of plate tectonics
  13. 13guyotflat-topped sea mounts that once penetrated the sea surface
  14. 14hadal zonealso known as the hadopelagic zone, is the deepest region of the ocean lying within oceanic trenches
  15. 15hydrothermal venthot springs on active oceanic ridges
  16. 16ice agethe series of glacial episodes during the Pleistocene period
  17. 17island arccurving chain of volcanic islands and seamounts, usually found in parallel to the concave edges of trenches
  18. 18littoral zonehe near shore area where sunlight penetrates all the way to the sediment and allows aquatic plants (macrophytes) to grow
  19. 19neritic zonethe relatively shallow part of the ocean above the drop-off of the continental shelf, approximately 200 meters (660 ft) in depth
  20. 20ocean basinthe deep-sea floor beyond the continental margin
  21. 21oceanic ridgeformed and evolves as a result of spreading in Earth's lithosphere—the crust and upper mantle—at the divergent boundaries between tectonic plates
  22. 22oceanic zonethe area of the ocean lying beyond the continental shelf, but operationally is often referred to as beginning where the water depths drop to below 200 meters
  23. 23passive marginthe transition between oceanic and continental lithosphere that is not an active plate margin
  24. 24pelagic zonesometimes called the open-ocean zone and can be contrasted with water that is near the coast or on the continental shelf
  25. 25seamounta submarine mountain
  26. 26shelf breakThe steepening of the bottom that marks the seaward limit of the continental shelf and the beginning of the continental slope
  27. 27sublittoral zoneThe biogeographic region of the ocean bottom between the littoral and bathyal zones, from the low water line to the edge of the continental shelf, or to a depth of approximately 660 feet (200 meters).
  28. 28submarine canyona steep-sided valley cut into the seabed of the continental slope, sometimes extending well onto the continental shelf, having nearly vertical walls
  29. 29transform faultOr transform boundary is a plate boundary where the motion is predominantly horizontal. It ends abruptly and is connected to another transform, a spreading ridge, or a subduction zone
  30. 30trenchdeepest in earths crust
  31. 31turbidity currentan underwater current flowing swiftly downslope owing to the weight of sediment it carries
  32. 32—
