- 1What is memory?Memory is the storehouse in the brain for all we know, facts and experiences.

- 2What are the 3 processes that someone must do in order to remember something?Encode, storage, and retrieval.
Encode the information we are given so that it is transformed in a way that can be stored in memory.
Store information and maintain it in memory. In order for this to happen there is a physiological change in the brain occurs called consolidation
Retrieve the information when it is brought to mind.
- 3What are the 3 separate memory systems?Sensory memory (ie: touch, sound, taste, etc)
Short-term memory
Long-term memory - 4What are the two types of declarative memory?Episodic
Semantic - 5What is episodic memory? This stores the memory of the events of your life. This type of memory is like a mental diary where you record personally experienced events. IE: life episodes
- 6What is semantic memory? This memory stores general knowledge, or objective facts and information. IE: mental encyclopedia
- 7What are 3 ways to measure memory?Recall, Recognition, and Re-Learning
- 8What are the 7 causes for why we forget?Encoding failure
Decay (ie: disappears)
Consolidation failure (ie: concussion)
Interference
Motivated forgetting
Retrival failure
Prospective forgetting
- 9How can we improve our memory?Organization
Overlearning
Massed practice vs. Spaced practice
Active Learning vs. Rereading
Mnemonic Devices - 10Explain one of the causes of motivated forgetting. (There are 3 kinds)Suppression is when someone tries to forget something on purpose by putting the memory out of their mind.

- 11Explain one of the causes of motivated forgetting. (There are 3 kinds)Repression is when horrible memories are actually removed from the conscious memory and the person isn't even aware that the horrible memories even happened.

- 12Explain one of the causes of motivated forgetting. (There are 3 kinds)Amnesia is temporary or total memory loss because of brain trauma (ie: concussion) or psychological trauma

- 13Long-term memory has two subsystems. What are they? Explain.Declarative memory = stores facts about our life
