- 1What does CPU stand for?Central Processing Unit
- 2What is hardware? The physical parts of the computer system - the parts that you can touch.
- 3What is software?Software is a collection of instructions that can be 'run' on a computer. These instructions tell the computer what to do.
- 4How is the speed of the CPU measured? The speed of a CPU is measured in Hertz(Hz). It is the device that carries out software instructions.
- 5What is RAM?Random Access Memory(RAM) is the part of the computer that temporarily stores the instructions that the computer is running, and the data it is processing.
- 6What does volatile mean, in terms of RAM?RAM is a volatile storage device. This means that if the computer's power is turned off the contents of RAM disappear and are lost. The storage capacity of memory is measured in bytes.
- 7What is ROM?Read-Only Memory(ROM) is used in most computers to hold small, special piece of software: the 'boot-up' program. ROM is non-volatile storage. This means that the data it contains is never lost, even if the power is switched off.
- 8Are peripheral devices part of the core of the computer? No
- 9What is a mainframe computer?A mainframe computer is a large computer, often used by large businesses, in government offices, or by universities. Powerful - they can process vast amounts of data very quickly.
- 10Where are mainframe computers kept, and why? They are kept in special, air-conditioned rooms because mainframe computers are so large and could overheat.
- 11What is the benefit of a mainframe computer being multi-user?They allow several users, sometimes hundreds, to use the computer at the same time, connected via remote terminals(screens and keyboards).
- 12What is an operating system? An operating system (OS) is a special piece of software that manages the general operation of a computer system. It manages files, helping us save our work, organise our files, find files that we have saved and load files. It manages the computers memory, deciding what should be loaded into memory and what should be removed.
- 13What is the user interface? The system that people use to interact with a computer (to give commands, and to see the results of those commands, etc).
- 14What is GUI?Graphical user interface. An interface built around visual things. GUI's are quite easy to use due to the visual nature of the interface - the user has lots of visual clues of what to do.
- 15What is the Command Line Interface(CLI) ?Many years ago when computers weren't as powerful, they could not display the colourful graphics required for GUI. The only interface available to users was the CLI.
