O'Brien

  1. MR CHARRINGTON

    • 'Spoke in generalities... he had become partly invisible'
      • See him as a very passive- fairly uninteresting figure- thus making it even more shocking to learn about his active part in their capture.
    • Mr Charington came into the room...demeanour...became more subdued’
      • By presen e of seemingly old man- shows he is worse than the black intimidating threatening guards. Shows him as an authoratative figure demonstrating the duplicity of society under the party's rule.
    • His bod had straightened..His face had undergone only tiny changes.. The black eyebrows were less bushy’
      • Such Short declarative sentences build suspension as the image of Mr Charington becomes mor vivid and clear, as it builds, - shows how small changes can amke a big difference -becoming clearer and clearer- almost like ha can see clearly now - MAN OF AUTHORITY
  2. POSITIVE

    • I know about all your contempt, your hatred, your disgust'
      • Ironically- it is true -O'Brien knows but does not feel the same the way Winston thinks he does- Recieveing all of this from a look shows how desperate Winston was to share all his thoughts and feelings with someone- gives reader hope.
    • 'WE shall meet in a place where there is no darkness..it would come true
      • Doomed from the start- misinterprets this- clues are there just deceptive- He ws in his thoughts all laong- we underestimate the Party's level of control.
    • 'He knew with more certainty then ever O'Brien was on his side'
      • Significance of 'mind itself' being controllable' moments before thisforeshadows how wrong he is about O'Brien- Orwell suggests he is already influenced.
  3. NEGATIVE

    • 'Heart stirred painfully..foretaste of death.. chilly shuddering feeling'
      • Perhaps manipulation of emotions has been so great that as long as he is feeling something he thinks O'Brien can help him- cannot recognise them anymore.
    • 'Sensation of stepping into a damp grave'
      • No control- everything is laid out- ignores his bad instincts out of hope. As if he choosesto step into his grave but in reality thre is no choice.
    • Winston felt...shot through by a streak of ordinary embarrasment’
      • He goes through a cycle of emotions- he has no iea how this encounter will go and seemingly prepares for everything- even the idea the ha heas ‘simply made a stupid mistake’ – except for the fact that O’Brien could have set him up.
    • Room seemed deadly silent
      • Silence normally would be seen as peaceful, especially after the previous descryption of how the telescreen’s absence gave silence amongst the noisiest things -‘deadly’ Has very negative, sinister connotations of survival and poisn and death- putting huge amounts of pressure on anything that W + J say or do from this moment on -Here, it seems that the telescreen would be a welcomed noise and distraction. Being aware of Winston’s strong feelings of hatred toward the telescreen, this gives an idea of jsut how much danger the two could be in.
    • Shall is say it, or will you?...We are alone’
      • The way such a question is posed is clearly laying a trap for Winston- which he falls right into- again because of his willingness to trust- humanity loses against such harshness of the party. -Makes Winston feel as though he can trust him, as if they are in this together and he too would willingly ‘say it’ and incriminate himself to make Winston do so – also w=shown in the collective pronoun- we.
    • Took the decanter by the neck...filled up the glasses with a drk red liquid’
      • -The vague description of wines is mainly down to Winstons lack of knowledge and exposure to everyday food items we as readers take for granted. However, it also serves a a very sinister depiction of blood -This links to the metaphorical description of the ‘neck’ of the decanter –violent- sinister- brutal connotations linking to the consequences of this meeting.
    • ‘When he came to swallow it, the stuff was distinctly disappointing’
      • Represents his hopes about the brotherhood- disappointing
  4. WINSTON

    • 'He was the tormentor .. protector .. friend'
      • Contradicting and confusing like his relationship with Obrien- shows psycological torture.
    • 'I shall save you. i shalll make you perfect'
      • Unnatural and uncomfortable- he is doing the opposite of saving him. Want to 'cure'- suggesting Humanity and logic is a disease. METAPHOR of ''washing clean'
      • CONVENTION- IIdea fo trying to strive for perfection- sacrificing humanioty for pure thought.
    • 'gentle and patient .. doctro,teacher even a priest'
      • Well respected people we trust, depend on and admire- mixed messages-all are selfess- higher purpose- maybe W believes he is his salvations
