Topic 5- Homeostasis
What is Homeostasis?
- how we maintain a constant internal environment
- in response to external or internal changes
Why we need Homeostasis
- important for enzyme activity
- important for cell function
- controls temperature
- controls blood glucose
- controls hydration
Negative Feedback Loop
- Homeostatic control is achieved using negative feedback mechanisms
- if the level of something rises, control systems reduce it and vice versa
- the response is the opposite of the stimuli
Control Systems
- The Nervous System
- The Endocrine System
- both systems have receptors, coordination centre and effectors
- receptors- cells that detect changes to the internal or external environment.
- these changes are known as stimuli
- coordination centre- receives and processes information from the receptors
- sends out signals to the effector
- effectors- muscles or glands that carry out the response to restore optimum conditions
- receptors- cells that detect changes to the internal or external environment.
