1. Confined Pressure = equal pressure

   • Directed Pressure = not equal in all directions... makes biotite flat sheets
     • Micas line up perpendicular to directed pressure (playdough)
     • found at tectonic plates

2. Foliated texture = repeated layering... gneiss, phylitte, schist, slate

   • Nonfoliated/granoblastic texture = marble, quartzite

3. Metamorphic Grade -> changes the grain size & foliation

   • Low Grade = Low Temp & Pressure
     • slate
       • schist
         • phyllite
   • High Grade = High Temp & Pressure
     • gneiss
       • quartzite
         • marble

4. porphyroblasts = a large crystal that has grown around finer grains

   • GARNET is mineral found as porphyroblast

5. Minerals in metamorphic rock

   • staurolite
   • kyanite
   • sillimanite

6. SHOCK metamorphism = when meteor hits earth

   • CONTACT metamorphism = when rock is in contact with igneous magma/lava.. convergent/divergent boundary
   • REGIONAL metamorphism = mountains folding... at convergent boundaries
     • METASOMATISM = hot water circulates at divergent boundary
   • BURIAL metamorphism = from weight of layers increasing pressure&temp

7. CALCITE & LIMESTONE & MARBLE

   • mineral calcite makes up limestone
     • limestone metamorphosed = marble

8. QUARTZ & QUARTZ SANDSTONE & QUARTZITE

   • mineral quartz makes up sandstone
     • sandstone metamorphosed = quartzite
