ATOMS
1. WHAT ARE ATOMS?
- An element is a substance that can neither be broken down nor converted to different substances by ordinary chemical reactions.
- The smallest particle of an element is the atom, which is itself composed of positive protons, neutral neutrons, and negative electrons.
- All atoms of a given element have the same unique number of protons.
- Neutrons cluster with protons in atomic nuclei, (except hydrogen), contributing to the mass number of the nucleus. Electrons orbit the nucleus within specific regions called electron shells. Shells at increasing distances from the nucleus contain electrons with increasing amount of energy.
- Each cell can contain a fixed maximum number of electrons. An atom is most stable when its outer-most shell is full.
- Isotopes are radioacitve; their nuclei spontaneously break down, forming new elements. This releases energy and often releases subatomic particles
