Text Based Adventure Game

  1. Prescribed and Self Described Criteria

    • The player begins with no equipment but can pick up items from the map and use them.
    • The player begins in one of the centre squares of a 5 x 5 map grid.
    • There must be at least two Non-Playable Characters (NPCs) that can be talked to.
    • The player can navigate the map using valid commands: "north" "south", "east" and "west". Other navigation commands will return: "I do not understand
    • When talked to, the two NPCs will give a random game hint from a possible list of 5 hints. E.g. "The bakery is north."
    • Have a series of events that the player must complete to finish the game.
    • If the player tries to move outside the boundary of the map a message appears explaining that the way is blocked, and the player cannot move in that direction.
    • When the player arrives at a new location a text-based description of the location is displayed.
    • The map must be displayed visually, as ASCII art.

    • the player must be able to navigate the map, talk with NPCs, interact with objects and you must have a way to finish your game.

      • The Player must use commands such as Find, Talk to play the game
      • The Player must Use their Name to start the game
  2. Developer Problems

    • Data
      • Data Storage and Retreval:
        • SQL Database
        • Create Statement Table
        • Local File that can be used to resume the game
    • Useability Principles
      • Safety: The game should minimize the risk of user error and protect the user's data. This includes preventing players from making irreversible mistakes (like deleting a saved game), providing confirmation prompts for important actions, and ensuring that player data is stored securely and privately.
      • Learnability: The game should be easy for new players to learn. This could include a tutorial or help system that explains the game's controls and mechanics, tooltips that provide information about game elements, and a gradual increase in difficulty that allows players to learn the game at their own pace.
      • Utility: The game should provide features that are useful and relevant to the player's needs. This includes a variety of commands for interacting with the game world, an inventory system for managing items, and a map for navigating the game world. The game could also include additional features like a hint system or a save/load game state feature to enhance its utility.
      • Effectiveness: The game should allow players to achieve their objectives with accuracy and completeness. This includes clear instructions, intuitive controls, and meaningful feedback on player actions. For example, when a player enters a command, the game should provide clear and immediate feedback about the result of that action.
      • Accessibility: The game should be usable by people with the widest range of abilities possible. This could include features like text-to-speech for visually impaired players, customizable text sizes and contrast settings for those with different visual needs, and support for alternative input methods for players with motor impairments.
    • User Interface
      • Features
        • Avatar Selection: Players could choose from a variety of avatars to represent themselves in the game. This could include different characters, animals, or symbols.
        • Dark Mode/Light Mode: This feature would allow users to switch between a dark and light theme for the game interface, which can be easier on the eyes in different lighting conditions
        • Save/Load Game State: This feature would allow players to save their progress at any point and load it later. This is especially useful for longer games
        • Leaderboards: Players could earn achievements for reaching certain milestones in the game, and leaderboards could track the highest-scoring players
